Standing in rural Frederick County, MD, overlooking the newly completed backyard of our client’s home, you get the feeling that you are visiting an exclusive resort.  It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, the backyard of this property was nothing more than a steep hillside of lawn. At our first meeting with the client, they spoke about their young children, and their desire to create usable outdoor living spaces for their family.  They wanted areas for outdoor dining and entertaining, a swimming pool, a fire pit and a small water feature.
Back at our office, a comprehensive master plan came to life.  When we presented our ideas to the clients they fell in love with the design; a series of terraced spaces on a central axis that ran parallel to the home.  Materials were carefully selected to match flawlessly with the existing home.  The stone walls for the project would match the stonework on the house.  Rock faced limestone caps would match the house sills.  'Sandalwood TechoBloc' pavers would mimic the color of their home.
Today, when you exit the client’s kitchen, rather than clamoring down a hill, you step onto a spacious pool terrace. The twenty foot by forty foot swimming pool, with automatic cover, is surrounded by a paver patio.  On axis, and above the swimming pool, a pool house is situated thus offering refuge for those seeking shade.  Two copper, cascading water features spill water into the swimming pool from its stone walls.  Within the pavilion, a spacious bar features an outdoor television and ceiling fans.  Stainless steel appliances, stone walls, concrete counters, irregular bluestone flooring, and a hand hewn shelf constructed from reclaimed lumber, complete the pool house. Dual curved stone staircases, with limestone treads and cheek wall caps, provide access to the bluestone patio below the pool terrace.  Here the soothing sound of falling water can be heard from a small water feature.  Three custom copper water spillways, varying in height, pour water into a raised basin.  A fire pit sits in the center of this lower patio and is surrounded by a stone seat wall. Views from the terraced outdoor spaces are picturesque and the client couldn’t be happier with the completed project.
