LCA 2010 Award of Honorable Mention
Project: Greenbriar Preserve Residence
Category: Outdoor Living Area Design|Build
The project was prompted by the owners' desire to enhance the rear yard of their newly constructed residence in Montgomery county, Maryland. Four criteria were given to the designer, by the clients, at the start of the design process:
-
A variety of outdoor spaces should be included in the design, from spacious patios for entertaining to small intimate areas for family use and small gatherings.
-
The design should be organic in nature.
-
The project should incorporate as much stone material as the budget permitted.
-
A koi pond should be included in the design.
The final design and installation incorporated a large raised entertaining area, adjacent to the home comprised of irregular bluestone with a limestone border. Recessed mortar joints were used on the wall of the terrace, giving the hardscape a more organic appearance of dry stacked stone walls. The iron railings of the terrace were designed to match the iron work within the residence.
Stairs lead guests from the raised terrace down to a spacious patio which features a two tiered koi pond. Stone walls were repeated in the water feature, to achieve a wonderful sense of continuity throughout the outdoor spaces. Western Maryland boulders punctuate the patio and soften the gunite koi pond. An intimate patio was nestled above the koi pond in lush woodland plantings.
